An unofficially official guide to all the words I keep capitalising.
If you’ve spent any time with Goddess Philosophy, you may have noticed that perfectly ordinary words have started acquiring capital letters.
Throne. Flame. Circle. Orbit. Pillar. Field. Guardian. House. Return. Sacred Access.
At some point, this becomes a reasonable question:
SO, ABOUT ALL THOSE CAPITAL LETTERS…
Fair.
Goddess Philosophy uses symbolic language to name different aspects of selfhood, relationship, desire, power, devotion, responsibility, and shared life.
The capital letters simply tell you that I’m using a word in its Goddess Philosophy sense, rather than its ordinary one.
A throne is furniture.
The Throne is not.
You do not need to memorise any of this.
There will be no exam.
These words are tools, not commandments.
Use what helps.
Translate what needs translating.
Ignore what doesn’t.
And if the language ever conflicts with the reality of your actual life:
Your actual life wins.
GODDESS
Embodied dignity.
The Goddess is not a superior woman, a perfect woman, or a woman who has finally achieved the correct amount of femininity.
She is not a spiritual rank.
She is not the final boss of womanhood.
And she is certainly not another impossible standard against which you need to measure yourself.
Within Goddess Philosophy, Goddess is symbolic language for a person permitted to inhabit the fullness of herself—body, intellect, emotion, desire, judgment, intuition, responsibility, boundary, relationship, and meaning.
In normal-person language:
You are allowed to be a whole person.
SELF-BELONGING
Remaining in relationship with yourself.
Self-belonging does not mean needing nobody.
It does not mean always choosing yourself over everyone else.
And it does not require disappearing into the wilderness to become aggressively self-sufficient.
It means remaining a truthful participant in the life that bears your name.
Your needs belong in the conversation.
Your values belong.
Your limits belong.
Your desires belong.
Your responsibilities belong.
Other people belong in the conversation too.
Self-belonging is the practice of staying in relationship with yourself while remaining capable of relationship with them.
THRONE
The jurisdiction of the self.
The Throne represents the part of life over which you retain authorship: your participation, values, boundaries, judgment, choices, and direction.
Everyone has one.
Yes, everyone.
Having a Throne does not make you more important than anyone else.
It means another person can influence you, love you, advise you, disappoint you, desire you, or disagree with you without becoming the final authority over your inner life.
The Throne is not superiority.
It is jurisdiction.
In normal-person language:
You get a say in being you.
SOVEREIGNTY
Authorship with responsibility.
Sovereignty is the capacity to govern your own participation while remaining answerable to reality and to the consequences of your choices.
It is not:
I do whatever the fuck I want.
Sometimes sovereignty says yes.
Sometimes it says no.
Sometimes it leaves.
Sometimes it stays.
Sometimes it changes its mind.
Sometimes it makes a terrible decision and has to deal with that too.
Sovereignty does not guarantee that every decision will be wise.
It means the decision remains yours to make—and yours to take responsibility for.
FLAME
What rises freely.
The Flame is vitality that arises in response to what we love, desire, value, admire, or choose.
It can appear as desire.
Generosity.
Sexuality.
Admiration.
Service.
Creativity.
Loyalty.
Devotion.
The important thing about Flame is that it cannot genuinely be commanded.
You can create conditions in which Flame is more likely to live.
You cannot demand that another person burn for you.
Fire has always been somewhat uncooperative like that.
In normal-person language:
The good stuff only means something when it’s actually alive.
CIRCLE
What exists between us.
The Circle is the shared relational space created between people.
It contains what we build together:
Trust.
Memory.
Agreements.
Pleasure.
Conflict.
Intimacy.
Responsibility.
Repair.
The Circle belongs entirely to neither person because neither person creates it alone.
You bring your Throne.
I bring mine.
And between us, we make something neither of us could make independently.
Congratulations. We now have a Circle.
TWO THRONES
Love without annexation.
Two Thrones describes a relationship between two people who remain sovereign while loving one another.
It does not require perfect equality in every moment.
One person may lead.
One may follow.
One may give.
One may receive.
Power can move.
Roles can change.
Devotion can be profound.
But neither person’s humanity becomes subordinate to the other’s.
Neither of us becomes larger because the other becomes small.
Two Thrones means there are still two authors in the room.
SACRED ACCESS
Intimacy is access, not ownership.
To know someone deeply is not to acquire them.
To be trusted with someone’s body, vulnerability, sexuality, history, devotion, dependence, or inner life is to be given access.
And access can be meaningful precisely because it is given rather than owed.
Sacred Access asks us to treat intimacy as something entrusted rather than possessed.
Love can grant extraordinary access to another human being.
It does not come with a certificate of ownership.
ORBIT
What meaning does through time.
Orbit is the sustained orientation that gathers around something that has acquired meaning.
People orbit relationships.
Families.
Purposes.
Communities.
Beliefs.
Responsibilities.
Places.
Sometimes Orbit is created by love.
Sometimes by devotion.
Sometimes by habit.
Sometimes by fear.
Sometimes by duty.
Sometimes by fixation.
Duration alone does not prove that an Orbit is healthy.
In normal-person language:
Just because you’ve been circling something for ten years doesn’t necessarily mean you should keep circling it.
PILLAR
Strength capable of carrying weight.
The Pillar represents self-command, responsibility, capacity, and the ability to carry what can genuinely be carried.
It is especially important within the masculine architecture of Goddess Philosophy.
But Pillar does not mean endless stoicism.
It does not mean never needing help.
And it definitely does not mean silently carrying everything until your spine metaphorically snaps while insisting:
“I’m fine.”
Sometimes strength carries.
Sometimes strength tells the truth about what it cannot carry.
A Pillar is trustworthy not because it is indestructible, but because it is honest about its capacity.
FIELD
The atmosphere we create around one another.
The Field is the relational environment shaped by everyone participating in it.
Behaviour contributes to the Field.
So do history, expectations, interpretation, resources, safety, power, stress, trust, and material circumstances.
This matters because relationships do not happen between two isolated nervous systems floating majestically through space.
Unfortunately, context has followed us here too.
What each person repeatedly brings into the relationship matters.
The conditions surrounding them matter.
That is the Field.
GUARDIAN
Stewardship without ownership.
The Guardian names the function of protecting and tending conditions in which dignity, trust, safety, and freedom can survive.
A Guardian does not own what they protect.
They steward conditions.
Protection becomes distorted when it turns into control.
Care becomes distorted when it removes another person’s agency.
The Guardian asks:
What am I responsible for tending here?
Not:
What am I entitled to control?
A surprisingly useful distinction.
HOUSE
The shared life we actually have to live in.
The House is what relationship becomes when philosophy encounters Tuesday.
Food.
Money.
Children.
Work.
Sex.
Laundry.
Illness.
Rest.
Schedules.
Conflict.
Care.
Who remembered to buy toilet paper.
The House is the inhabitable shared life created through ordinary choices, resources, responsibility, and repair.
Love may inspire the architecture.
Eventually somebody still has to take the bins out.
DEVOTION
What we freely give our lives toward.
Devotion is sustained, meaningful participation in something we value.
It can be romantic.
Spiritual.
Familial.
Creative.
Communal.
Practical.
Devotion does not require self-erasure.
In Goddess Philosophy, devotion has meaning because refusal remains possible.
A freely given yes carries a different kind of weight from a yes that cannot safely become no.
A yes means more when no was allowed in the room.
RETURN
The way back.
Return may be the most important word in the entire philosophy.
Because you will leave yourself sometimes.
You will perform.
Override your knowing.
Become frightened.
Seek approval.
Hide.
Get attached to certainty.
Make choices you later understand differently.
Be spectacularly human.
Goddess Philosophy does not imagine a state of perfect sovereignty in which this never happens again.
Return is the practice of noticing that you have left relationship with yourself and beginning again.
Notice.
Tell the truth.
Take responsibility.
Repair what needs repairing.
Choose again.
Come home.
The goal is not to never leave yourself. It is to know the way back.
THE ROSE
A petal can be true without being the whole flower.
The Rose is a reminder that one experience, belief, relationship, tradition, theory, or insight can contain truth without explaining everything.
A petal can be beautiful.
A petal can matter enormously.
It is still not the whole flower.
Goddess Philosophy asks us to remain capable of gathering new petals without forcing every new experience to prove what we already believe.
In normal-person language:
Finding one key that opens one door does not mean you should spend the next decade trying it on every lock in the building.
ONE LAST THING.
This language exists to help us see.
It should never become another system you have to obey.
You can use Throne and ignore Goddess.
You can understand Circle and decide you hate the word Pillar.
You can translate the entire framework into language that makes more sense inside your own life.
You can disagree with me.
You can change your mind.
So can I.
The terminology serves the philosophy.
The philosophy serves life.
Never the other way around.
No framework deserves your reality as tribute.
Especially one with excellent branding.
Including mine.
